Tips On Assembling Metal Storage Buildings
Metal storage buildings have become increasing popular over the last few decades. Homeowners usually purchase them to relieve crowding in the garage, so that they can reclaim it for their cars. The sheds are typically used as storage for things like camping gear, lawn mowers, and gardening equipment.
The buildings are usually small to medium in size and placed in a backyard for storage or to use as a shop. However, metal buildings are available to house a boat, recreational vehicle, or small plane. You can also find barn sized models that offer maximum space.
The purchase of a kit is an economical method of adding a storage unit to the yard. Most of the styles purchased for backyard use require two people less than a day to assemble. This excludes time spent on leveling the ground, building a floor, or pouring a concrete slab for a foundation.
You should never try to construct your building when it is windy. Floors are highly recommended, and a concrete foundation is optimal. You can, however, build a floor of wood or buy a flooring kit made for use with the kit. At minimum, clear away any debris, level the dirt, and pack it as tightly as possible.
The future steel buildings need to be placed on stable, level ground that is well drained. It will be difficult if not impossible to assemble a building on uneven ground. The doors will not work properly, and the alignment of roof supports will likely be out of place.
As you are putting the building together, you should pause frequently to check your work. It is critical that the walls are not allowed to get out of square, since this will cause problems. You will not be able to attach the roof if the rest of the structure is not in alignment. You should also be sure to keep everything level as you work, and make any adjustments needed as you go. Unless otherwise stated in the instructions included with the kit, do not anchor the building until it is completely constructed.
Your kit for future steel buildings should have detailed instructions. Read them through carefully before you start. Find the tools you will need and make sure they are functioning correctly, such as charging your battery powered screwdriver. Locate all of the parts shown on the parts list and do not start if your kit is missing any. Get the retailer or manufacturer to replace them first.
The kit should include weather stripping. Apply it as directed and double check that it has adhered properly. If it should fail, leaks will more than likely result. Damage to the floor, building, and the contents inside can result.
For those who plan to use the building for garden tools, a ramp before the door is often a good idea. This lets you roll heavy items such as a mower, edger, or tiller into place without the need to lift the weight. You might also consider the use of a solar panel to provide the power for lighting the interior if you like.
Proper maintenance will keep metal storage buildings in great shape for many years. The doors should be lubricated every six to twelve months with silicone spray so they open and close easily. If snow or leaves are allowed to build up on the roof, it can sag or rust, so keep it clear. Repair scratches as soon as you find them by cleaning the area and then touching up with a dab of paint to avoid rust. Tighten any loose bolts or screws immediately.
