The History of the Jeep
The Jeep has been an iconic figure in the motoring world. Seriously, no other off-road vehicle is as popular and widely loved as the Jeep. With so much appeal inside that off-road monster, the Jeep has its history deeply entrenched into the core of American patriotism.
In’40, three motoring companies were tapped to create a transport utility vehicle that will primarily serve the US Army: American Bantam Car Company, Ford Motor Company, and Willys-Overland. The primary objective of the project was to build a vehicle that can traverse certain terrains without compromising its durability. Willys-Overland got the contract but with their limited resources, the US Army soon requested Ford Company to build the vehicles using Willys-Overland design.
The finsihed Jeep was designated as GPW by Ford with G standing for government, P in reference to the 80 inch wheelbase, and W for the Willys-Overland car design. Thousand off Jeep were put into service during teh war ans some even went to serve the Russians and the British under the lend-lease program. Serving as a multi-purpose vehicle, the Jeep can be utilized as a communications vehicle or a when fitted with a .50 cal machine gun, can become a light attack vehicle.
With World War II ending in Allied victory, the Jeep soon became asscoiate with victory and freedom. Pictures of Allied soldiers posing with Jeeps catapulted the Jeep’s status into higher heights. With images of the Jeep serving as props for Roosevelt, Churchill, Eisenhower, and MacArthur, the Jeep easily became a vehicle for people of high stature.
By the time war ended in’45, Jeep became a household name. Using the free publicity it received during wartime, Willys-Overland began to build civilian Jeeps. General reaction from the public was very positive, which led to the Jeep becoming one of the best “selling” vehicles of all time.
As years passed by, the Jeep evolved little by little. Tweaks were made, both minor and major. But the one thing that did not undergo surgical change was the Jeeps familiar look.
Today, the Jeep is one of those vehicles that enjoys a very large following of people coming from varying backgrounds.
