Creating and growing your own trucking business requires you to learn a lot about trucking and running a small business. If you want to be a successful trucking business, you must know a little about trucking and business. This goes beyond just driving; it also includes having a sense of basic business principles and how to manage a single member company.

Before you start your independent trucking business, think about the type of business you want to to have. With a clear vision, your chances of achieving success over the long term are greater than those without a clear vision of what they want to achieve. With a clear outcome in mind you can develop a plan that moves you forward on a regular basis.

Executing on your business plan is the fastest way to achieve the goals you’ve set for yourself. Think about working your plan daily, prioritizing your list of to do’s and staying on course. You will likely encounter obstacles along the way. This is normal for any trucking business owner. Don’t get discouraged. When you are serving multiple roles, you will encounter difficult times.

A key aspect of being an owner operator is finding others to partner with. Even if you are a sole proprietor, you have to develop relationships with other individuals or business owners who can support the attainment of your goals. Have you reached out to other drivers or those who own their own trucking businesses? How about others who own and operate their own rigs? Do you have a good mechanic for your truck? If you want to be truly successful, develop relationships with others in your trade.

After just a little while, your business is bound to grow. When you start to achieve the success you desire, reassess your priorities. Make sure to ask yourself if you need to create new goals or if you require additional resources to maintain your status. Achieving success is not easy but can happen when you are determined to reach your goal.

Being an owner of a growing and profitable trucking company is a great way to make an independent living. It’s does require work however. If you plan on being successful you will need to grow as an individual and always be learning. This is how the most profitable trucking companies became who they are today. Start small and grow in a meaningful way.

As an operator of a successful trucking business, I have seen my share of successes and failures. Those who do well with their trucking business often take on certain characteristics that allow them to take their truck off the lot and quickly begin to generate a profitable return on their investment. There are tons of success stories, despite the difficult economy, and many of these share a lot in common. In this article, I’ll discuss the common characteristics of semi truck operators who win.

Over time I have seen a large number of truck operators that have struggled to make it as owner operators. Some of these semi truck operators have been first time owners while others have been more experienced. Regardless of qualifications, operators who can’t make it on their own share similar characteristics. Unfortunately they continue to make the same mistakes over and over again.

The first place to begin when thinking about becoming your own business owner is motivation. When I was younger, sitting in school, I didn’t have a lot of motivation to excel. In fact, I pretty much squeaked by because I had little interest and was unmotivated. Over time, I developed a real motivation for trucking and being an owner operator. I enjoyed the lifestyle that trucking could bring and at the same time was interested in running my own business. Is being your own boss and having your own semi truck something that you are internally motivated to do? If not, consider a different vocation. If you are not internally motivated, then when times are tough you’ll be hard pressed to stay focused and be successful.

Any successful owner operator can tell you that when you are truck leasing, or running a small fleet, it isn’t good enough to simply be a driver. When you become a commercial truck operator you have now added the titles of President, CFO, Chief Negotiator, Accountant, and Mechanic to what used to just be “Driver.” Needless to say, you have to be a jack of all trades, and it takes a lot of work to be an owner operator in the commercial trucking business. To keep a truck running and make sure that you are running a profitable business you need to be on top of every one of these jobs.

To be very successful in the commercial trucking business, you can’t just do the jobs that appeal to you and ignore the others. Rather, you must consistently do those things that help you do well in every area of your business. Being overly selective about which loads you and going to haul and where you want to go is another mistake. You need to select which loads will be the most profitable for your business and carefully manage your costs. Very often you’ll be taking loads or trips that aren’t very appealing but they’ll keep you running. With internal motivation and an eye on the business, you do what you have to in order to create and maintain a successful semi-truck business.

Semi trucks are now affordable with our semi truck financing program. Learn more about our truck leasing options at LoneMountainTruck.com
