Most people love supercars, whether for their speed, strength or their incredible looks. People were always fascinated by speed, power and beauty, and if you combine those three in a high-performance, street-legal car, you get something to drool over.
Sports cars began to appear in the late 1940s from the factories of established car manufacturers such as Ferrari, Jaguar, and Porsche. In those days, sports cars were more like racing cars. Racing was very important to the manufacturers as it was one of the best forms of advertising. The car that won an important race got an extensive media coverage.
After the World War II a new breed of sports cars began to emerge. The battle for supremacy among the world’s leading manufacturers such as Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bugatti, Porsche, Aston Martin, Ford, and others, began to grow.
1964 was the year that gave birth to famous Ford GT40, a legendary car, generally considered to be the first real supercar. It was also the first American car to beat the Ferrari at their own game (not until 1966) and break the 200mph barrier at LeMans.
Inspired by the GT40, in 1966 Lamborghini produced a car that is commonly considered to be the first true supercar for the road – the wonderful Lamborghini Miura. Named after a ferocious type of Spanish fighting bull, Miura was the first production car to feature a mid-mounted engine.
The next few decades brought better technology and many extraordinary feats of engineering. From Ferrari Testarossa to Bugatti Veyron.
Today, the most expensive street legal supercar you can get is Bugatti’s 1000bhp Veyron. Veyron is more powerful and faster than any F1 car. The Bugatti Veyron’s top speed is 407 km/h. A marvel of engineering.
Supercars represent technology, beauty, dreams and prestige. And they will keep going faster and faster, that is their nature.
