In order to improve the level of instructor ability the DSA set up the register of approved driving instructors (ADI). The main aim of this was to improve the way in which pupils where taught. now it is illegal to give driving tuition for money without a trainee or fully qualified instructor badge.

Three tests have been set up in order for you to become a driving instructor. The first will test your knowledge of the rules and regulations and hazard perception. This test is the first step to becoming a driving instructor but another two will follow.

To pass the first part of the test you must score 20 ot of 25 in each section and an overall mark of 85 out of 100 to enable you to pass the initial of the test.

The second part of the test involves watching video clips of a camera fixed to a moving car. These video clips will have varying road conditions and your job will be to identify hazards. Depending on how fast you identify the hazards how high your score wll be. Thier will be 15 scoring hazards in 14 video clips the faster you react to the hazard the more points you score.

To progress on to part 2 you must pass both parts of the initial test. the second part of the test will test your ability to drive.

The part two test or advanced driving test will be a test of your own driving ability. you would be expected to drive to a high standard and not commit more than six driving faults. The test will be supervised by a senior examiner in your local district. A trainee instructor badge can be approved if you have successfully completed both the first and second test.

On the final examination you will be accompanied by a senior examiner who will pretend to be a learner at different stages. The tests lasts one hour and is in two parts. the first consists of the examinar playing a pupil at the beginner stage and the second at the partly trained. He/She will make different faults and you not only need to identify these faults but to correct them.

In the first test you may attempt it as many times as you need to pass but in the 2nd and 3rd tests you are allowed only 3 attemps to pass. if you are unsuccessful you will have to go back to the start.
