Here is something you may not know: when you drive a Jeep, you become part of a exclusive club. Well, it’s not that exclusive and it seemed to only happen to me when I lived in California. People driving Jeeps would honk at to other people sporting Jeeps. No, seriously. I have since moved from there and no long get waved to, but I was a big thing in Cali.

Jeeps were first introduced for US military use during WWII. They were incredibly useful for the soldiers and many of them want that type of vehicle when they return from the war. The fact that they are 4×4 and look cool makes them popular to this day. Here are the different models they currently have for 2010:

The 2010 Jeep Commander

The V6 comes in a 15 city and 20 highway. The V8 comes in at 13/19. The V8 comes with a Multi-Displacement System, which deactivates four cylinders when eight are not needed.

2010 Chrysler Jeep Compass

5 speed Manual Transmission rates 23 city and 28 on the freeway 5 speed AT gets 21/25

Chrysler’s 2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee

The 6 cylinder automatic model is rated at 16/21. There are two V8 option on the Grand Cherokee: one has a Multi-Dispalcement System that shuts down 4 cylinders when you don’t need them to get you 13/19 and the big HEMI version that gets you a not so great 11/16.

2010 Jeep Liberty

16 miles in the city and 22 on the highway is what the EPA is rating Chrysler’s Jeep Liberty at for 2010.

Chrysler’s 2010 Jeep Patriot

2L Engine 23/27 5 speed MT 23/28 5 speed AT 21/25

Chrysler’s 2010 Jeep Wrangler

This Jeep comes in a 6 cylinder only. Whether you get the automatic or standard transmission, the EPA rates this vehicles at 15/19.

The 2010 Chrysler Jeep Wrangler Unlimited

15/20

How do I squeeze every drop out of a tank of gas?

a) If you drive in 4WD unnecessarily, it will not be good for you fuel rating. Try to drive your vehicle in 2WD as much as possible.

b) Less cylinders is usually much better on fuel. Choose the smaller option, if you can, to be most efficient.

c) Your air conditioning can absolutely kill your gas mileage. You may not like it, but roll down the windows if you can. Your pocket book will thank you.

Listen, Jeeps are cool and fun to drive, but they can have a bit of a rough rid and are really not that great in the fuel efficiency department. If you are looking for massive gas mileage you may want to consider a hybrid or maybe even a sedan. Keep your Jeep as a second car.

Bill has a lot more free stuff at his Car Comparison website. It is awesome, it is all free and talks about things like the Toyota Camry hybrid gas mileage.
